Liz Brokenshire, Byfleet Care's Coordinator |
What we do Byfleet Care - also known as Byfleet Community Action - is a neighbourhood care scheme that offers help to housebound, elderly or disabled residents of Byfleet and West Byfleet. Volunteers help with shopping, collection of prescriptions, transport to the Health Centre or other essential journeys. We have over 50 dedicated volunteers, the majority of whom provide transport within the two villages. A few volunteers act as duty officers, taking requests for help Monday to Friday between 10 and 12 am. Byfleet Care is supported by Lloyds TSB Foundation and Byfleet United Charity, together with donations raised by fund-raising events such as Quiz nights. We are always looking for new sponsors. We also raise funds at Tesco’s Foyer in Brooklands and at Waitrose in West Byfleet. Every year we are present at Parish Day. Who can use Byfleet Care? Any resident of Byfleet and West Byfleet, who is aged 60+ or has a disability or a temporary mobility problem, may ask for help. Requests come from clients themselves, friends and relatives. Referrals also come from Social Services and the Health Services. How do clients register? Call the coordinator on 07936 513863 and leave a message. The coordinator will make an appointment to visit. She will then explain how to request help and sign you as a client. Thinking of becoming a volunteer? Volunteers are members of the community who have an hour or so to spare on an occasional basis. Volunteers do not make regular commitment and can always say ‘no’ to any request. Their expenses are met. Volunteers are essential to our organization. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer please call the coordinator on 07936 513863.
